SSAA NSW & SSAA Wagga Wagga Try Shooting Day at The Range!

Sponsored by Beretta Australia.

Under the guidance of our experienced range officers, participants had the opportunity to safely handle firearms and experience the thrill of shooting. Using the .22 calibre Tikka T1X UPR scoped bolt-action rifle, attendees aimed at various targets during their chosen two-hour session.

We had two sessions. Sessions were run for two hours.

Session 1: 11 am-1 pm

Session 2: 2 pm-4 pm

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced shooter, our Try Shooting sessions are tailored to suit all skill levels.

With no previous experience required, everyone had the chance to learn in a safe, fun, and friendly environment.

With 50 enthusiastic attendees, the joy and excitement were palpable throughout the day. Divided into two sessions, each lasting two hours, participants received individual instruction on scope usage, magazine handling, bolt action, and reloading techniques.

Families were encouraged to join in the fun, with parents of junior shooters eagerly participating in the program. It was heartwarming to see families bonding over this wonderful sport.

During the event, SSAA Wagga Wagga hosted a delicious sausage sizzle, providing fuel for our hungry shooters and volunteers alike. Each Try Shooter received a SSAA NSW Show bag and a Beretta Australia Show bag filled with information and goodies to enjoy.

A huge thank you to Beretta Australia for their generous sponsorship, providing Tikka T1X UPR scoped rifles, ammunition, and show bags.

Special appreciation goes to Gemma Dunn from Beretta for her invaluable assistance throughout the day.

Thank you to Coffs Guns and Rural Supplies for donating prizes to the SSAA NSW Wagga Wagga Branch.

If you missed out on this, Try Shooting Day, don’t worry!

SHOOTING RANGE SECURED

SSAA NSW is excited to announce the securing of a range in the Sydney basin.

A large number of members live and shoot in the greater Sydney region. With urban encroachment, a second airport about to come online; ranges in the area face the risk of closure.

An increasing population has also resulted in additional members wanting to shoot in the region.

With existing ranges at or near to capacity, SSAA NSW and SSAA Sydney Branch have been working hard to identify range opportunities in the region.

Whilst work is ongoing as to how to secure land and funding to build a new range, we have some very exciting news.

SSAA NSW has secured a range within the Sydney basin with contracts now signed. The range is the previous Auburn Shooting Academy range.

This secures three 25 metre ranges with 19 bays in total that will be licensed for pistol and longarms.

Additionally, there will be a training room, safe storage and a firearms dealership.

Now the purchase is complete, we await for our range approval and dealership licence which will be received soon.

In the meantime, we will undergo upgrades refreshing the Centre, hire staff and put in all the processes needed for a shooting range so we can have an official opening. This is expected to be in 2-3 months time and earlier if possible.

The SSAA NSW Auburn Shooting Centre will not only cater for existing shooting clubs, it will be a premier facility for SSAA Sydney shooters.

SSAA Sydney using the facility will be key to its success and their input to the running the facility is very important.

SSAA NSW CEO Jai Rowell has been unanimously appointed as the General Manager who is also General Manager at St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre.

Lance Miller, SSAA NSW President said:

“This year we will be opening ranges in Dubbo, Temora and now Auburn. Securing a range in the Sydney basin is part of our commitment of accessibility to the sport for all. It is exciting to be opening a new range in the Sydney basin and we look forward to welcoming everyone soon.”

Adam Ryan, SSAA NSW Board Director and SSAA Sydney President said:

“Thank you to SSAA NSW for securing this facility for the future of the shooting sports and also to SSAA Sydney working collaboratively now and certainly into the future with the shooting centre. Securing an additional range in the Sydney basin has been attempted for more than a decade without success due to the many challenges including access to land and the high cost of range development. I am proud of this achievement and looking forward to more projects being delivered.”

Jai Rowell, SSAA NSW CEO and SSAA NSW Auburn Shooting Centre General Manager said:

“I am really excited to see another facility come on line and once the upgrades have been completed and approvals received, I look forward to shooting at the Centre with everyone. It will be great to have SSAA Sydney branch utilising the range along with other clubs who have previously shot at the Centre. This will a great opportunity for all and we are seeking feedback on the best way we service customers.”

As the upgrades occur and whilst waiting on the new approvals to come through which, we will take that time to speak to new and existing users of the range to ensure a smooth transition.

For Clubs wanting further information, you can email the Centre at:

admin@auburn.nsw.ssaa.org.au

We look forward to seeing you at the range soon!

SSAA NSW is pleased to announce that PTA’s (Permit to Acquire a Firearm) have now gone online and are available to be issued digitally to people with a Gun Safe Account.

As you aware SSAA NSW has been advocating for this change and we are pleased by the announcement from the NSW Firearms Registry. Online PTA’s will speed up the process for licenced firearms holders and provide greater security, as those sent electronically do not need to be posted in the mail.

Please see the attached fact sheet from the NSW Firearms Registry that we have received.

SSAA NSW will continue to advocate for better services for members and all legal firearms owners.

A very happy person at SSAA NSW has already applied for a PTA online and we look forward to reporting back as to how the process went.

We are also advocating for the introduction of digital firearms licences and have already received positive feedback. Watch this space!

Thank you to all SSAA NSW members for your support!

To log in to a GUN SAFE account, you will need to have a Service NSW account or create a new account here https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/…/how-to-create-an-account

Then to apply for a Permit to Acquire (PTA), please go to https://firearms.police.nsw.gov.au/cssp/s/ and log in to start your application.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a wholly SSAA NSW owned commercial training organisation, Industry Training Specialists Pty Ltd (ITS).  ITS is committed to providing the highest quality of safety training in specialised firearms related activities to the government and non-government sectors.

Extensive consultation was undertaken to identify training needs with a view to offering greater access to a wider spectrum of training and education solutions. These will be focused on meeting the current industry requirements, where the availability of quality training providers and resources are presently limited and unable to cope with the growing demand.

Training the safest civilian firearms owners in the world

SSAA NSW provides an effective and credible voice on behalf of all NSW shooters to the wider public, community leaders and authorities. We know that training, safety and professionalism are extremely important in the normalising and acceptance of our sport in the wider community.

ITS is key to SSAA NSW being a positive influencer for all legal firearms owners in NSW. Like our ranges, ITS provides an avenue to show the decision makers in government that NSW legal firearms owners are serious about being the best, safest and most well-trained civilian firearms owners in the world.

Higher levels of training and accreditation

SSAA NSW has established ITS to build upon the foundations of training already offered on our ranges around the state. Once licensed, SSAA NSW has the ranges and qualified range officers to induct legal firearms owner in safety, competency and ethics.

ITS will further the education of our shooters, providing accreditation at the highest levels of safety and skill, above that of a standard firearms licence test.

Registered Training Organisation

ITS commenced operations on 1 January 2021 with the engagement of Guy Pitchford as the Training Manager. Over the past nine months ITS has been establishing courses, policies and procedures and, despite COVID-19 delays, has recently completed a rigorous assessment process by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for registration as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).  It is expected that ASQA will advise the outcome of this process soon.

As previously advised, ITS WILL NOT be competing with Branches for the delivery of the SSAA NSW Firearm Safety Training Program.

Once it gains RTO status, ITS will be concentrating on delivering nationally accredited training courses.  ITS will also be developing and delivering a range of associated non-accredited courses.  As the scope of these courses expands, it is proposed that ITS will offer a “Master Hunter” accreditation which will involve students studying a range of accredited and non-accredited courses at their own pace.

Registrations now open

Click here to download a flyer seeking registrations for an online training course in Basic Navigation.  We would encourage you to circulate this as widely as possible within your shooting community.  Further information may be obtained from the ITS general contact email address: info@itstraining.com.au

The first priority of SSAA NSW is the safety of all members, volunteers and staff. As the only peak body in NSW with a training organisation, SSAA NSW is committed to promoting the highest levels of public safety and proud to be the safest shooting body in the state. We are excited to offer this new opportunity to our members and all legal firearms owners in NSW.
